We’re getting closer to the high school season, and for those who aren’t certified, now is a great time to get it done. Many of us have been officiating for years, but advancement requires certification. Please refer to last week’s email if you’re interested in pursuing that path.
Each week, I get replies asking why a specific official isn’t getting games. To clarify our process, we assign based on several factors (in no particular order):
-Rank
-Availability
-Who we’ve seen work before
-Who we’ve spoken with one-on-one
A few common issues:
-Some officials are unranked in the system. Arbiter orders rosters by descending rank, so unranked names appear near the bottom.
-Some officials’ availability hasn’t been updated in Arbiter.
-When a higher-ranked official is available on the same date, they may be assigned first.
If you’re unranked or low-ranked, we need to understand why. That’s where the one-on-one conversation helps: were you added but never ranked, or is there past context we should know before assigning you?
For anyone asking, “Why is it hard to get games this season?”, this is why. We won’t assign games solely because someone texts or emails saying they worked last year, especially if their Arbiter profile shows them as unranked. Please be patient and schedule a brief meeting with Dave using the link below (15–20 minutes). From there, we can determine your schedule. Think of it like any job: if you get a new boss and want extra hours, you introduce yourself. The same applies here.

Some of you might be tired of hearing this, and we get it. As we get deeper into the season, we trust that this process will get easier for everyone. There will be some learning curves, but trust that we plan to make this one of the best officiating staffs in all of Colorado.
